The “Business and the Natural Environment” course offers an insight into the dynamics between organizations and the environment, with a particular focus on sustainability and adaptation to climate change. Designed for PhD students in Business Economics, this seminar provides the conceptual and theoretical tools to analyze and understand the complex interactions between business practices and contemporary environmental challenges.
Objectives and Content
•Acquire a fundamental understanding of the concepts linking socio-ecological systems, ecosystem services and nature’s contributions to human well-being.
•Explore dominant and emerging approaches in the literature on the relationship between companies and sustainability, such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line, along with theories such as Co-evolution.
•Understand how organizations can adapt to climate change and manage extreme events from a business management perspective.
Course Structure
The seminar is divided into five intensive sessions:
1. Basic Concepts of the Natural Environment: Introduction to socio-ecological systems, ecosystem services, and adaptation to climate change.
2. Sustainability and Business: Review of dominant and emerging approaches to the relationship between companies and sustainability.
3. Adaptation to Climate Change: Understanding the strategic response of organizations to gradual changes, or extreme events, in the natural environment, as well as understanding the consequences of these changes on their performance.
4 and 5. Research Paper Development: Sessions dedicated to the elaboration and refinement of a research paper applying the theories and approaches studied.
This course promotes active learning, culminating in the creation of an individual research paper. Students will define the topic of the paper in collaboration with the professor, ensuring applied research relevant to their areas of interest.
This seminar is especially designed for PhD students in Business Economics who wish to further research the intersection between the business world and environmental challenges, with a particular interest in contributing academically to the literature on climate change adaptation. .
